Incongruous

In Incongruous, Anthony Caruso places his unclothed body, often retaining frilled socks and ordinary accessories, within public urban environments. Rather than performing expressively for the camera, he remains composed, passive, or absorbed while architecture, chance encounters, and the reactions of others complete the image.

The series examines how bodies are classified through gender presentation, clothing, vulnerability, and acceptable public behavior. Nudity creates the initial disruption, but the work ultimately turns attention toward the social environment and the assumptions viewers bring to it.

The photographs result from brief, self-directed actions made under actual public conditions. They are both constructed self-portraits and records of the encounters produced while making them.
