Anthony Caruso

About the Artist

Anthony Caruso is a self-portrait photographic artist whose work explores visibility, vulnerability, gender expression, and the relationship between the body and public space. Working primarily with his own body in ordinary urban environments, Caruso uses nudity, incongruous presentation, and self-directed photography to examine observation, social expectation.

Caruso uses the incongruous presentation of his own body to invite questions about how we read gender, clothing, vulnerability, and acceptable behavior, leaving the viewer to confront the assumptions they bring to the encounter.

His practice combines elements of photography, performance, and lived intervention, with the act of constructing the self-portrait increasingly becoming part of the work itself. Caruso’s photograph Observed was selected for the 2026 juried exhibition Wild, Weird and Wonderful! at Not Shockboxx Gallery. He is currently developing his photographic practice into site-responsive and live performance.
